I work in an office in Akihabara.
I would endorse what the writer says - find out the exact model name/number of the item you are looking for and get the price in your home country. Then go to Yodabashi camera and Laox which are the two big general gadget shops. Find out their price (usually they are the same). Then go to a couple more of the other shops and trade them off for a lower price. Once you get a lower price (easily done by negotiating and then walking to the door) go back to Laox and buy it at that price or slightly lower from them, saying you have seen it cheaper elsewhere.
Always make a note of the shop's name where you had just been to give yourself credibility. Reason to buy from Laox is that they are used to dealing with foreigners and are more accomodating in negotiations.
Good luck.

7 hours of pure delight stroling at Akihabara, a cultural and cozy enviroment, much like a 'kings cross 5:30 fridays' asian equivalent, but with a selection of 2914819481587158715 shops exclusively for gadgets, video/computer games, and of course, japanese cartoon porn.
Claire, one could call it paradise.

I think that we must think about the 'PPP' of the country. In London, to pay 40 pounds for a two people dinner is the average price. But not for a Uruguayan tourist.
I think we need to find what is the average sallary in Tokio first :)
